Interior Design Disasters We’re Saying Goodbye to in 2024

As we step into 2025, it’s time to reflect on the interior design trends of 2024 that no longer serve us. From overused materials to overly uninspiring lighting, some trends simply missed the mark or overstayed their welcome. Here’s a farewell to the interior design disasters of 2024!

1. Bouclé Overload

Bouclé fabric was everywhere in 2024. From sofas to armchairs, this textured, nubby fabric became synonymous with modern luxury. However, the trend quickly spiralled. Entire living rooms swathed in bouclé felt more like an Instagram showroom than a functional space. Its impracticality, especially in homes with pets or children, also made it a regretful choice for many. What’s Next? We’re moving toward more durable, versatile fabrics like textured velvets or natural weaves that blend comfort with longevity.

2. Fast Furniture’s Fast Decline

Fast furniture—cheap, mass-produced pieces remained popular for its affordability but led to significant regret. Pieces that looked great online often arrived flimsy, uncomfortable, and short-lived. The environmental impact of these disposable items also weighed heavily on eco-conscious consumers. It’s definitely time to steer towards longer lasting, high-quality furniture that doesn’t go out of fashion in a week or break in two.

3. Flat-Panelled Walls

Flat panelled walls, often painted in neutral tones, aimed to add sophistication but often fell flat (pun intended). These walls lacked depth and personality, leaving rooms feeling unfinished and uninspiring. Instead, a moulding with some character and detail to it is much more interesting and likely to add depth to your home.

4. Impersonal Accessories That Everybody Owns

From mass-produced vases to “it” decor pieces like chain links or sculptural hands, 2024 interiors were flooded with identical and uninspired accessories. These pieces lacked individuality, turning homes into carbon copies of Pinterest boards. There is a quest for Instagram-worthy interiors with lots of people rushing to buy the next trending item or dupe of a higher quality product – now were all for cost effective options, but you can still give your home some personality whilst shopping affordably. Incorporate unique, meaningful decor—whether it’s vintage finds, family heirlooms, or locally crafted pieces, this will add authenticity to any interior.

5. Strip LED Lighting as a Primary Light Source

Strip LED lighting, initially popular for its versatility, quickly became a design disaster when used improperly. Garish, overly bright strips installed as the primary lighting source has created harsh and unwelcoming spaces, with poorly installed LED’s often emitting uneven and unattractive glows. Instead, layered lighting with warm, adjustable fixtures can create ambiance, with Integrated LEDs being used tastefully as accent lighting rather than a primary source.

While 2024 was a year of bold experimentation, it taught us valuable lessons about balance, function, and individuality in interior design. As we embrace 2025, the focus shifts toward timeless elegance, sustainable choices, and thoughtful personalization. By leaving behind these trend disasters, we’re paving the way for homes that truly reflect who we are—beautiful, functional, and enduring.
