The Hottest Interior Design Trends 2019

With the arrival of the new year comes the inevitable trend forecast, and 2019 is no exception. As professional interior designers, it’s our responsibility to stay on top of every new trend that hits the interior design world, whilst retaining our integrity and ability to discern whether they’re here to stay or just a flash in the pan. Our clients rely on our expert knowledge when it comes to incorporating trend-let styles into their home, restaurant, hotel, office or retail space. Most people don’t want to have to update their space every couple of years (though, of course, some do – no judgement here!) so it’s important for us to advise clients on whether a trend is here to stay, or something that will need updating in the not-too-distant future.

When it comes to interior design, it’s usually advisable to keep the basics timeless, incorporating seasonal trends in small, inexpensive ways. Paint colour, cushions, bed linen and table lighting are all things that can be switched up relatively easily; whereas furniture, joinery, pendant lighting and ironmongery are often more complicated and costly to change up every time a new trend hits.

It’s advisable to take all published trend lists with a pinch of salt, incorporating only those that really excite you. By keeping the more permanent aspects of your project timeless and classic, incorporating selected trends in small, manageable ways, you’ll end up with a final design that not only stands the test of time, but always feels fresh and on-trend as well. That being said, here’s the Pfeiffer Design edit of the hottest interior design trends for 2019.

Night Watch Green
According to PPG Paints, the colour of 2019 is a nature-inspired deep shade of green, known as Night Watch; described as a ‘rich, luxurious, and classic shade of green that reflects consumers’ urge to reconnect with nature in today’s tumultuous society.’ The interior design world has been obsessing over green ever since we started bringing nature back into our homes in the form of houseplants, and 2019 is no exception. Dee Schlotter, PPG senior colour marketing manager describes the dark green hue as a shade that ‘pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.’

Go easy, this beautiful moody green is best utilised in smaller spaces – a ground floor cloakroom or dining room would be ideal, especially accessorised with some dramatic gold-toned pendant lighting. Not convinced? Why not incorporate this cool, calming and restful green in the form of a bespoke headboard?

Large-Scale Floral Prints
Who’d have thought? Your grandma’s curtains are finally on trend! 2019 sees the return of large, brightly coloured floral prints, on everything from cushions and lampshades to sofas and wallpaper. Minimalism is well and truly dead with the return of this unapologetically loud, maximalist trend; and every fabric supplier from Romo and Black Edition to House of Hackney fully embracing granny-chic. It’s go big or go home when it comes to floral prints this season, so make sure to stay clear of subtle and small print florals and go large!

Rich Jewel Tones
The world of interiors is still besotted with all things velvet, and with that comes the rich, deep jewel tones that really show it off. We’ve started to see splashes of jewel tones appearing over the last couple of seasons, but 2019 really sees them come out in full force so don’t be afraid to run with it. Why not commission a sumptuous velvet sofa in your favourite jewel tone?

Four Poster Beds
Not that this trend ever really went anywhere, but this season why not consider an extra special four poster for that statement master or guest bedroom. Take inspiration from the master bedroom at the Artist Residence in Brighton’s book and incorporate a large, airy four poster with moody green walls and engineered wood floors for that homely boutique hotel feel.

Sustainable, Handmade Pieces
With sustainability at the forefront of everyone’s minds, look to natural fibres like raffia, sea grass, jute, bamboo and rice paper this year. Ibiza Bohemia is still huge in terms of design, so don’t be afraid to fully embrace natural materials and incorporate eco-friendly aspects in your space. Organic materials like clay, timber and natural stone bring the outside world in and can be hugely effective in creating a sustainable, eco-centric space. People are looking for more than mass-produced furniture in their homes these days, with one-of-a-kind pieces being coveted owing to their ability to bring a truly unique feature to any room. In 2019, look for furniture pieces with purpose: furniture made from recycled, renewable resources and environmentally-friendly materials.

Boho/Nomadic
The boho look is set to explode next year, particularly come the warmer months. We’re no longer just talking macrame and jute rugs, this year the boho look will extend to every aspect of our homes; from colourful wall hangings and cacti, hand-woven pouffes with mirrors and pops of brightest orange to native motifs, shells and animal prints.

Terrazzo
Marble is officially dead, and with it comes the unexpected revival of terrazzo. Originating in Italy in the 18th century, and known as ‘Venetian Pavement’, terrazzo is a composite material of marble chipping set in cement. Once the fragments are set, the surface is polished to a super smooth finish. Traditionally sold as flooring, and incredibly popular in the 1970s, terrazzo is making a huge comeback in 2019. Created as a way to reuse chipped marble pieces that would otherwise be discarded, it is by default a sustainable material and fits the bill for a sophisticated take on a unique, artisan surface. Incredibly versatile, modern terrazzo provides a fun, colourful and fresh alternative to concrete or granite. Use it for floors, in bathrooms and for kitchen splash-backs, as well as incorporating terrazzo-inspired prints into upholstery and even utilising terrazzo print wallpaper if you want to dip your toe into the trend with caution.

Passementerie
Yes, really. If 2018 saw the return of velvet in a big way, this is the year to go even more sumptuously retro. Passementerie, the art of making elaborate trimmings or edges; tassels, bobbles and fringing, is back; along with the resurgence of statement ceilings and chintz, and the return of vibrant ochre and night watch green tones. After Mid-century Modern’s long reign, the drama of passementerie brings a welcome change to the world of interior design. This fabulous new wave fringing ‘used to seem grandmotherly, but that era is over now—now it seems young, modern, and glamorous,’ says Jonathan Adler. There are a multitude of ways to incorporate this dazzling trend: think floor lamps, cushions, and even sofas. Used strategically, passementerie can take a simple room, and turn it into something completely unique. Bear in mind that with this trend, less is definitely more – you definitely don’t want to end up with a Victorian sitting room (or maybe you do – you do you!)

So there you have it, our roundup of the biggest interior design trends of the year. If you take away anything, let it be that, this year, more is more! Everything from large floral print wallpaper, to Passementerie, bold paint colours and terrazzo surfaces screams maximalism. This excites us hugely – as interior designers, it gives us far greater scope to make bold choices instead of playing it safe. 2019 is going to be an exciting year.
