The face of fashion is ever changing; trends come and go season after season, colour palettes, textures and silhouettes transform so often it can be hard to keep up. Have you ever noticed how interior trends, ultimately, follow fashion? The world of interiors isn’t quite as ‘fast’ as the fashion world, but the trends do seem to filter down from our headwear to our homes.

It’s not unusual to see a seasonal colour palette reflected in both the worlds of fashion and interior design. Take this A/W season for example, warm, rich rust tones and camels are everywhere – from catwalk to the couch! Textiles reflect those seen in fashion too, linen is as much at home on a sofa as a sundress. Some other aesthetics and styles we’ve noticed filtering down from the fashion world include: 70s Bohemia, Scandi minimalism, animal print, faux fur, maximalism and neutral tones and natural textures such as rattan and bamboo… the list is endless!

That’s not to say that you should be switching up your living room every season – far from it. If you do feel like you need an update, try experimenting with different textures – think adding in a faux fur throw over the sofa in the colder months, replacing it with some beige linen cushion covers come Summertime.

Ultimately, you want your home to reflect your personal style, so it makes sense that you draw your inspiration not only from what you wear and the particular trends that speak to you, but also from your own intrinsic sense of self, and the practicalities that suit your lifestyle. Don’t feel pressured to embrace every trend that comes around – this will only end in a home that feels distinctly out of date within a couple of years – but also don’t be afraid to embrace the trends you love! Start small, a throw or item of tableware can be an ideal gauge of how longstanding your love for a particular trend will be. If you still love it years later, consider dipping your toe in further. Paint can also be a great way to experiment: if you’re over the millennial pink thing in a couple of years you can always repaint and start again – it’s certainly easier than retiling a bathroom!

When it comes to having fun and experimenting within the world of interiors, trends can be a fantastic source of inspiration and a change to break out of your comfort zone. Don’t let them dictate the way in which you decorate, but equally don’t be afraid to embrace a trend if you love it and it reflects your personal style.
